4. Where do you stand on the female Viagra debate?
VV: The FDA just rejected the second major attempt at a female libido enhancer, a drug called flibanserin. For once the government is resisting the imperious Pharma lobby, and I find that consolatory as a tax-paying Bantu horn.
Synthetic stimulation is not the answer to improving the hypoactive female sex drive in America. Shallow cultural prescriptions of the ideal female are the primary culprit. A handful of particularly callow elites decided they prefer female figures closer to preteen than anything remotely woman in the traditional sense, mass marketing transferred those preferences to image, and the idea infiltrated our culture like a hungry leviathan in our sacred rivulet of all things intimate and mysterious.
It’s an atrocious kerfuffle of ecumenical politics, frankly.

Party Time: Buzznet, The Sims™ 3 Ambitions, and Blue Smurf Poop

Me and Aviva doing what we do best (acting like we're five) in the Sims photo booth. Pri-vaaaate eyes, they're watchin' you...
Anything that involves dressing up like a firefighter and eating technicolor candy is a party in my book. Buzznet teamed up with The Cab for such a fiesta in Hollywood last week to promote the muy anticipated Sims™ 3 Ambitions game.
Comedian Rob Delaney hosted (select Twitter gems below), Buzznet star and living Barbie Audrey Kitching showed off her rad Tokyolux line, and The Cab performed an intimate set for some very stoked fans.
Highlights: BritneySpears.com editor and fashion muse Michael Shirley stole the show with his crafty bling table of studs, stickers, and shiny things for maximum nametag bedazzling. Sims costume photobooth. Smurf cookies. Specialty big kid tea. Meeting all the insanely cute Buzznet bros and girls. Taglines on the Sims business cards. (Personal favorite: Tattoo Artist: Specializing in back pieces of dolphins, butterflies, and the Insane Clown Posse.) Rob Delaney color-coordinating with Audrey Kitching's hair (planned). Sugar-high dance party to the face.
Sweet highlight video montage here. xo

Almost Famous: Julian Lynch

Julian Lynch understands the subtle power of individual sounds, and his new album Mare makes that beautifully apparent. Lynch blends his own ambient enhancements with the world-wandering sounds of Animal Collective and the spacey vocals of bands like Sore Eros and Real Estate. It is folksy, warm, and strangely tangible. It is a lo-fi camping trip to the moon via djierdoo.
The influence of his current studies in ethnomusicology is apparent throughout the album, but not in any way you would expect. Where many artists blend disparate sounds for the sake of surprise or draw on tribal percussion to save an otherwise bland arrangement from obscurity, Lynch introduces electric and organic like old friends. The track “Ears” is the perfect example-- it opens with a simple enough arrangement of chillwave wa-wa-wa guitar and snare drum only to have a bold, electric guitar join in like the lovable (and slightly buzzed) life of the party.
Tracks “Ruth, My Sister" and “In New Jersey” highlight the craftwork on the album. The first combines laid-back bass clarinet and a heartbreakingly innocent music box so naturally that the song immediately transcends its newness. A minimal bass guitar intimately propels the hazy vocals until the vocals and clarinet begin a hypnotic call-and-response that fades into a wandering clarinet solo. There is no distinct build or come down, and the effect is gentle, genuine clarity.
“In New Jersey” similarly lets loose the gypsy woodwind with a more Indian-inspired aesthetic. The first half of the song paces forward like frogs hopping around a Tibetan pond until the electric guitar soars down like an amiable summer lightning storm. Every transition is natural, and every sound belongs.
Listen to "Ears" here, download Mare on iTunes, and catch one of his killer sets with the bass clarinet below:

If you’re in to Bear in Heaven, Tanlines, or Lynch’s label mates Ducktails, this album is a must. Actually, if you’re into beautiful music, this album is a must. Count it in with the awesomely genius year of music that has been 2010 (and it's only summer!) xo
OHAI, new Buzznet.
Glad you're getting the hang of it lady. Riding with the change. I dig the follow feed the most-- it's so interactive and addictive as such because you guys post so much great stuff all day long.
